In a sensitive move, the Uttar Pradesh government has sought a report on the release of prisoners aged 70 and above, as well as seriously ill convicts serving life imprisonment in state jails.
The Yogi Adityanath government is working to release the prisoners on humanitarian grounds, a government spokesperson said.
The Uttar Pradesh State Legal Services Authority has been directed to provide a list of such prisoners in all jails in the state within a month. The chief secretary, Durga Shankar Mishra, issued instructions to all officers that the action should be secured within two months.
The spokesperson said that the Yogi-led government has implemented a series of reforms to revamp the prisons in the state.
